Let's Talk Core Banking... Not in Theory, But in Reality

In the early 1990s, I made a pivotal shift in my career, from traditional banking at Bank of America (originally NationsBank) to the evolving world of financial technology. At BofA, I had the opportunity to be part of a major enterprise initiative: the rollout of the Merlin branch automation platform, a transformative project that sparked my fascination with how technology could redefine core banking operations. Merlin was part of a broader push toward modernizing banking operations, helping banks to transition from manual, paper-based systems to more efficient, automated processes. It was one of the many systems in the 1990s that helped pave the way for the banking automation technologies we see today.

That experience led me to Kirchman Corporation, a pioneering provider of core banking systems, particularly known for its Dimension 3000 platform (IBM's AS/400 system). It was at Kirchman where I truly fell in love with core banking – the complexity, the architecture, and the mission-critical nature of banking systems. What started as a career shift became a lifelong journey.

Over the next 30 years, I immersed myself in the world of core banking platforms, watching them evolve through client/server to web-based systems, and now to cloud-native solutions. I was not just an observer; I was part of it – helping clients modernize, adapt, and transform their banking operations through each technological wave.

Eventually, I went on to spend considerable time at Harland Financial Solutions (Finastra), FIS, and 18+ years at Fiserv – roles where I expanded my knowledge and impact far beyond core systems. I deepened my expertise in digital banking, payments, BI/data analytics, CRM, and the increasingly critical domains of modern APIs and middleware integration. These experiences gave me a holistic understanding of what it takes to enable scalable, secure, and customer-centric financial services in today's landscape.

Today, I am proud to be part of Engage fi, a national consulting firm of 80+ dedicated, and full-time industry experts, each with similarly deep, hands-on journeys across banking and fintech. We are not influencers or podcasters chasing trends – we are practitioners who have lived the transformation of financial services from the inside out. We stay intricately connected to the vendor ecosystem, the emerging tech community, and the next generation of banking professionals, continuing to learn, guide, and shape what comes next.

The Core Banking Vendor Landscape

Navigating the core banking ecosystem can be a daunting task given the sheer number of providers and the complexity of their offerings. Each core platform is built with specific strategic priorities and markets in mind – some cater to large commercial banks with global operations, while others focus solely on credit unions or community banks. Providers may prioritize modern API-driven architecture, real-time processing, mobile-first experiences, or deep compliance and regulatory features. Some are built cloud-native from the ground up, while others are modernizing decades-old legacy systems.

Understanding these nuances is critical for financial institutions seeking the right fit. Below is just a sample, not an exhaustive list, of the core banking providers currently in the market. Each brings unique capabilities, target segments, and strategic advantages:

  • FISFiservJack Henry – Traditional providers in the space often referred to as the Big Three in core banking, with a broad suite of core banking platforms covering everything from retail to commercial banking (banks, credit unions, and fintech’s of all varying sizes).

  • CorelationSynergentCU*AnswersFLEX Credit Union TechnologySharetec Systems, Member Driven Technologies, Share OneVisiFI, CompuSource SystemsBlossomAMI Information Systems – Specialize in serving credit unions, with member-focused capabilities; several following cooperative models, offering collaborative approaches and specialized capabilities.

  • CSIFinastra, DCICOCC, SHAZAM – Strong players in the regional and community banking space with deep domain expertise and high-touch service (note: COCC supports both community banks and credit unions with same core platform).

  • NymbusMambuThought Machine10X Banking, TemenosOracleInfosys Finacle, Helix by Q2Open Banking Solutions – A mix of emerging innovators and established global providers delivering next-generation, cloud-native, and API-centric core systems designed for speed and flexibility. Their solutions span from embedded finance to open banking enablement to support complex international operations.

This list demonstrates the breadth and depth of the core banking landscape, but it is far from complete. With so many choices and variables – technology stack, scalability, integration ecosystem, service model, regulatory compliance, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

That is where we come in. We help financial institutions decode this landscape – identifying not just who the providers are, but how they serve, where they excel, and whether they align with your institution’s strategy, infrastructure, and long-term goals. Whether you are considering a core conversion, modernization, or new digital offerings, we can guide you through the decision-making process with clarity and confidence.

Relevancy Over Market Share

Rather than emphasizing market share or legacy presence, it is far more insightful to assess relevancy, which reflects:

  • Current client success

  • Real-time implementation track records

  • Product roadmaps aligned with evolving digital and regulatory expectations

  • Vendor responsiveness and partner-like engagement

This refines the landscape significantly. Relevancy, then, is not about who has been around the longest – it is about who is:

  • Deploying new clients quickly and painlessly, with minimized risk

  • Modernizing client tech stacks without vendor lock-in

  • Helping institutions remain competitive amid rising fintech pressure

Who has won in the past and is winning now is no longer about numbers, but about narrative and execution.

Hands-On Experience

At Engage fi we do not just guide financial institutions through core system evaluations – we stay in the trenches with them through the full implementation lifecycle. We are doing that today for thirty-five various sized institutions all converting to various platforms. That gives us a unique lens – we see firsthand which vendors deliver on promises, which fall short, and how those outcomes align with future-state goals. Relevancy, to us, is not theory or assumptions – it is observed performance.

If you want to talk about the core banking landscape, core modernization, API strategies, or middleware approaches – do not settle for abstract theories or vendor one-pagers. Talk to the team that lives in this space daily. We do not just observe from the sidelines. We are sitting in both our clients’ and their vendors’ offices. We guide financial institutions through assessments, yes – but more importantly, we stay locked in through implementation, integrations, and transformation. That is where real insights are earned.

We are not here for social media likes; we are here to deliver outcomes. No one knows this space better. Contact us when you are ready!
